Resin kits, often referred to as garage kits, are a type of scale model kit made from resin rather than injection-molded plastic. The term "garage kit" comes from the early days when small independent model makers would cast these kits in their own garages, creating highly detailed and unique designs that weren’t available in mass production.

There are two main types of resin kits in the Gunpla and scale modeling world:

1. Full Kits – These are complete model kits made entirely from resin, meaning they don’t require any additional parts from an existing model. They often feature intricate details and unique designs that aren’t found in traditional plastic kits.

2. Dress-Up Kits (Conversion Kits) – These kits are designed to enhance or upgrade an existing model, usually requiring a plastic inner frame or base kit to complete. They can add extra armor, change proportions, or introduce more detailed sculpting, hence the name "dress-up kit."

Challenges & Considerations

• Resin kits require painting – Unlike regular Gunpla or model kits that come pre-colored, resin kits are cast in a single color (often gray or off-white), meaning they need to be fully painted.
• More experience needed – They don’t have snap-fit connections like plastic model kits, so they require cutting, sanding, pinning, and glueing to assemble properly. Some parts may need heat bending or additional modifications for a perfect fit.
• Safety precautions – When sanding or cutting resin, always wear proper protection, such as a respirator or dust mask, because resin dust is hazardous if inhaled. Work in a well-ventilated area and clean up properly to avoid exposure.

Despite the extra effort, resin kits are highly sought after because of their exceptional detail and customization possibilities. With patience and skill, they result in stunning, one-of-a-kind models that stand out in any collection.
